I will be towing my travel trailer to San Diego in about a month and want to change the rear diff. fluid in my 2004 Titan.  What tool do I need to remove the drain plug and fill plug?  Also, is the fill plug located on the back of the differential?  How much fluid should I be putting in?  Thanks for your help.

all you need is a 3/8 drive ratchet and small entension the plug is square and 3/8 drive pits perfectly. there are 2 plugs one on the pan and one under the diff for draining. remove the top one first this is your fill plug then remove the bottom plug or drain plug it will take approx 2 qts and i would recommend synthetic to handle the heat alot easier

Thanks for the tips!  Just changed the fluid and it went very smooth, except for the gunk stuck on the bottom plug!

Just changed my rear end fluid and went with the synthetic 75-140 that the TSB recommends.  I have 10,000 miles on an 04' with big tow.. Havent used the truck for towing but found a nice gooey slug stuck to the top of the magnetic drain plug.. Dissected through slug and only found only micro grainy metal shavings no big slivers or anything..----Was pondering what would be the danger in slightly overfilling the rear end with added fluid by topping it off when the front end is slightly lower than the back...Could a slight increase in fluid be beneficial??

It won't hurt. alittle more fluid would help to displace heat though. not much.

I don't have the tow pack. Do you think I have to worry about the rear diff issues I have read about with others?

 | The rear-end takes 3.6 Pints according to the owners manual, see the link below on the TSB concerning rear differetnial oil after any maintenace is done, supposed to use Nissan's 75W90-140 Synthetic oil, they however have to honor any oil that meets API specs, I used 75W-140 Amsoil Sever Gear OIL, firm believer in Amsoil http://www.infinitihelp.com/Ownership/Bulletins/Nissan/2005/ NTB05-008.htm   |
