I live in hilly terrain and on the last two or three 15 mile trips to the lake with a 3,000 # bass boat the rear end is smelling like it's hot.

Haven't I read there was a problem with the rear differentials?  I have the cover with the heat fins and assumed the correct fluid had been changed.  Is there something else to look for before I take it in?

Id check the fluid level to make sure it is full...might not be a bad idea to change the fluid, depending on how many miles it has....it is very easy to do. ..GL

Took truck to dealer.  They said it has a small axle seal leak at one wheel and the discharge is causing the smell.  Unit has the synthetic fluid in it and was full.  Hopefully the seal replacement will repair the issue.

Tom, it's my understanding the dealer is replacing the axle; I'll know tomorrow since that is my service appt.

Dealer ordered the wrong axle the first go-round but had the correct one in the second day and gave me a loaner car to make it by.  The repair seems to be fine.  Have done no towing yet but don't expect problems.  I looked at the seal on the old axle and it definately was the problem.  Hopefully, problem solved.
