what is the best for car hauler trailers?

Moslty interstate driving 4-5 times a year.

Electric would be better IMHO.   You can adjust them, and they are more effective.  That would be my choice...no question.

Go to a car show in your area...ask around, or walk through the hauler parking area, and look at the trailers.  I think that you will find very few with surge brakes...

electric is the way to go.  if you like surge be sure to check local laws.  surge brakes are not legal for new sale in nc.

I have surge brake on my boat trailer and I have never had any issues.

Either brake is fine, electric is adjustable for driving conditions. Downhill is only good advantage, or heavy load.
